T-shirt woven with air by Japanese loopwheel

In Wakayama, Japan, there is a loopwheel knitting machine called "Tsuriami" that is said to have originated in the Meiji era (1868~1912). However, why do we ignore efficiency and use this machine instead of modern knitting machines that can produce garments cheaply, quickly, and in large quantities? There is a our thought that we absolutely cannot compromise on.

Here introduce the behind of the brand's first item, "CREW NECK PACK TEE," which embodies the designer's thoughts.

History of "Tsuriami" knitting machine

The origins of "Tsuriami" knitting, a technique deeply rooted in Japanese craftsmanship, can be traced back to the Meiji era, over a century ago. This unique method, involving the suspension of knitting machines, was first introduced in Wakayama, Japan, utilizing Swiss-made machinery.

After the war, "Tsuriami" knitting experienced its golden age, garnering widespread recognition for its exceptional quality and craftsmanship. However, the advent of high-speed knitting machines in the 1970s marked a turning point, as production efficiency took precedence over traditional methods. Gradually, "tsuriami-ami" knitting began to fade from prominence.

It`s like an Air-knitting Machine

Suspended from the ceiling of a workshop, a cylindrical knitting machine pirouettes gracefully, its needles weaving a symphony of yarn. This is the "Tsuriami", a traditional Japanese knitting technique .

Unlike its high-speed counterparts, "Tsuriami" embraces a gentler approach. The fabric, suspended by its own weight, is gently guided into the needles, free from excessive tension or strain. This delicate process allows the yarn to relax, its natural elasticity and softness preserved.

Three conditions sought for the fabric

"The texture of real vintage", "Not see-through", "A touch that makes you forget you're wearing it" Fulfilling these three was an absolute condition that we have desired. After three years of conception, trial and error, only the "Tsuriami" knitting machine made it possible.

Effortless Comfort: A Garment that Embraces You

The fabric of the "CREW NECK PACK TEE" is knitted in a tubular shape using a "Tsuriami" knitting machine. The reason for the comfortable fit that makes you forget you're wearing it is the texture that is good because it is knitted at a low speed and the tubular fabric that has no seams on the sides.

Unexpected Feedback

After a while of starting sales, the number of purchases from women increased as well. The reason seems to be that they liked the texture that is different from others after seeing their husband's shirt that they washed. Also, since the fabric is opaque, it can be used as a single piece even in the sweaty summer. Now it has become a popular item that has fans of both men and women.
